A Thoughtful Approach to Care
At Stepping Stones Care, our Model of Care is deeply rooted in understanding the unique experiences and perspectives of each child. Liam Barrett-Hawkins, our Counselling Therapist, highlights the importance of this understanding as the foundation for all therapeutic interactions and interventions.
The Journey Begins with Seeking to Understanding
"The beginning stages are always seeking to understand the child," Liam states. This process involves gathering comprehensive information about each child's history, including any significant traumas or events that may have impacted their development. It's about stepping into the child's shoes, seeing the world from their perspective, and understanding how they perceive themselves and others. This empathetic approach allows therapists to be more considerate and aware during their interactions, tailoring their responses to meet the child's unique needs.
Thoughtful Care
Once a deep understanding of the child is established, the focus shifts to meeting their emotional, social, and physical needs. Liam explains, "With thoughtful care, we can start really thinking about the needs of the child and what they're going to need in their relationship with me." This stage is crucial for building a trusting relationship where the child feels unconditionally accepted and empathically understood.
Enabling Meaningful Relationships
As this meaningful relationship develops, it provides a safe space for deeper therapeutic work. Therapists can engage with children one-on-one, exploring their internal world, including their emotions, perceptions, and responses to various experiences. "I can be there as a therapeutic companion," Liam notes, highlighting the importance of being a supportive presence as the child navigates their feelings and thoughts.
Progressing Beyond Trauma
The ultimate goal of this model is to help children develop a more integrated sense of self. By understanding themselves and their own processes, children can begin to heal from past traumas and progress towards a healthier future. "This is what really enables them to fill the need that they can go into these experiences a lot more," says Liam, pointing to the transformative power of this approach.
Successful Transitions
When children reach this stage, they are better equipped to transition out of care, whether into foster care or back with their families.
At Stepping Stones Care, our approach is not just about addressing immediate needs but also about fostering long-term well-being and resilience. Through understanding, empathy, and consistent support, we aim to help each child we care for to thrive and move forward confidently into the next chapter of their lives.
