Celebrating National Storytelling Week

Welcome, dear readers, to a special celebration at Onyx House! As we immerse ourselves in the enchanting world of narratives, we're thrilled to be part of the National Storytelling Week festivities.

At Onyx House, storytelling is more than just words on a page; it's an art form that weaves together the threads of imagination and reality. National Storytelling Week provides us with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the age-old tradition of sharing tales.

Tonight, when L settled for bed April, our Residential Support Worker, asked him if he wanted her to read one of his new books about feelings. L agreed and chose to listen “when my dragon gets anxiety”.

L sat on his bed and covered himself with his duvet, giving April a blanket. L sat listening to April read and he looked at the pictures engaging with April. Whilst reading the book L engaged with April by talking about what was happening in the pictures. L recognised the man who invented the lightbulb. L said “we have learnt about him at school” April said “oh that’s good” and he smiled.

April explained that sometimes people have to practice something before they get it right.

Once April had finished reading the book L was looking at the back of the book to see what other books there are.

L pointed to a couple of books he might like to read. L then said he read his other books by himself when he was in bed the other night. April said “that’s really good are you enjoying them?” L said “yes” and smiled again.

April said “shall we see if we can get some other books like it” and L nodded.

April said goodnight to L and he replied “night” too asking if she could turn off his light.

From a night time of storytelling, to a smiling, happy child and his enthusiasm to reading – a story which makes the whole team at Stepping Stones Care smile and hopefully makes you smile too.
